A Rhodesian Ridgeback... bird hunting?!?!

"I am breeding a gun dog."

Francis Barnes, Rhodesia - Founder of the registered Rhodesian Ridgeback

"... a dog that could track prey from game birds, to stags, to lions."

O
ld official AKC breed history

"... a dog that could flush a few partridge, pull down a wounded stag, or guard the farm."

C
urrent official RRCUS breed history

"His excellent scenting powers are scarcely second to the special gundog breeds,
and he can be trained to be a very satisfactory gun dog.
If you wish to have a brace of birds in the pot,
and will take a little trouble to show him what you want,
he certainly will find them for you."
Excerpt, original functional breed description, South Africa.

Judge's Notes: Overall, the dogs in today's qualifier did better (60% qualified) than the last one (50% qualified). The entrants ran the gamut from puppies to Dual Champions. Without exception, every single dog made a strong showing. Even the dogs that did not qualify today missed doing so by only the slightest of margins. It was so refreshing to judge an entry where every single dog showed such strong potential.

Qualified dogs are now eligible to Trial for game birds for HRA hunting titles.
